Did You Know?
UPDATE ON CHILDREN'S GARDENING PROGRAMME The children's gardening programme has been in operation for many years. Each year in June children between the ages of seven and 13 years register and are
assigned a small plot of land by the driveway down to Mt. Scio House (Pippy Park Headquarters).
Throughout the summer they spend two 2-hour sessions weekly, sowing the seed, weeding and generally caring for their crops. At the end of the
summer they harvest what they have grown and are recognized for their achievements at a barbecue held at the end of August.
This year the extremely dry weather has been an extra challenge to the children and they have had to spend most of
their time watering their plants. The crops may be small but are coming along well. In addition to growing their flowers and vegetables they do crafts using mostly natural materials and go on Nature walks when time permits.
Two students,
Emily Gushue and Lori Williams are in charge. 17 children are registered this year. They are encouraged to enter their produce in the Newfoundland Horticultural Society's Flower and Vegetable Show being held at the Curling Club August
24th - 26th.
RECORD NUMBER OF CARAVANS IN THE TRAILER PARK.
A total of 24 Caravans have been booked to stay at the Trailer Park this summer. Most of these originate in the United States, many from Texas, California, Nevada and the deep south. Most stay from 2 to 6 days. Caravans are groups of trailers or motor homes organized by clubs or tour operators who do all the logistical work ahead of time including making the bookings and dealing with any problems along the way.
Most of the Caravans that have visited this year number between twenty and thirty RV's though in the past groups as high as 90 have visited. The Trailer Park has 158 RV sites plus and overflow area. Incidentally there is now a laundromat available to campers at the Trailer Park office for their extra convenience.
