The Opportunity
Pippy Park Golf is seeking a dedicated, hands-on Assistant Superintendent to join our turf management team. Reporting to the Superintendent, in this role you aren’t just managing grass; you are a key steward of a premier landscape. You will balance the art of turf maintenance with the logistical challenges of our Atlantic climate, ensuring our golfers enjoy championship conditions from the first thaw of spring to the final frost of autumn.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in overseeing all aspects of daily maintenance, including course setup, mowing, bunker maintenance, moisture management, and cultural practices.
- Monitor & evaluate course conditions, implementing best management practices to ensure all greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and rough meet the highest quality standards.
- Assist with the operation, repair, and winterization of the irrigation system to optimize turf health and playability.
- Perform & supervise pesticide, chemical, and fertilizer applications, equipment calibration, and detailed record-keeping
- Lead small-to-medium capital projects, such as tee construction and leveling, drainage installation, or bunker renovations.
- Direct, mentor, and train the maintenance team with intent of fostering a culture of respect, safety, and proficiency.
- Ensure all employees adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and safe operating procedures.
Qualifications & Skills
- A degree, or certification in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field is preferred.
- 2–4 years of experience on a golf course maintenance team.
- Prior experience working within a unionized environment (specifically UFCW) is considered an asset.
- Must possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Pesticide Applicator’s License.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Familiarity with Atlantic Canada’s “shoulder seasons” and the unique challenges of overwintering cool-season grasses in this climate (snow and ice cover, desiccation).
- Proven leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with management, board members, colleagues, and guests.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
