Friends of Pippy Park

Purpose

The Friends of Pippy Park is an incorporated, non-profit group founded in 1984. The purpose of the organization is to:

  • Promote Pippy Park
  • Enrich the experiences for visitors to the park
  • Fundraise, and
  • Sponsor projects to further the objectives of the park and the Pippy Park Commission.

The Friends are a helpful, support group who want to ensure the prosperity and enhancement of the park by encouraging its maximum appreciation and sustainable use by the largest number of people.

Representation

The Friends of Pippy Park is represented on many committees and foundations connected with projects and programs in the park. The Friend’s Board of Directors includes representation from the Pippy Park Commission and many user groups of the park.

Activities

The Friends publish maps and brochures among other materials to help promote the Park. The group occasionally conducts guided tours for visitors, organizes meetings, special events and children’s programs.

The Friends’ Growing in Pippy Park subcommittee is working to increase the amount of food growing in Pippy Park. In August of 2013, the committee hosted a ‘Gardens in Pippy Park’ Bus Tour to connect and showcase all of the organizations and people that are engaged in exciting projects in Pippy Park. The tour included MUN Botanical Garden,  MUN Community GardenElaine Dobbin Centre for AutismMercy Centre for Ecology and Justice,  Easter Seals Garden and the Friends’ own Family Garden (previously co-facilitated with FEASt).

The Family Garden has been operated as a community garden where families learn and grow together, usually meeting on Sunday. Any families with children under 12 in the St. John’s area are welcome to participate. This year we may be moving the garden to a new location!

The Friends partner annually with the Rainbow Riders in organizing a Christmas in Pippy Park, an afternoon event on the Sunday before Christmas. The event, held in the Rainbow Riders Barn on Mt. Scio Road, includes a ‘Nativity Tableau’ carol singing and a brief Ecumenical service.

The Friends submit briefs and recommendations to the Pippy Park Commission on such subjects as the Pippy Park Master Plan Review. The group also organizes periodic cleanups of the Park.
